Filtration is a key component of any rainwater harvesting system. For those looking to filter to drinking water standards, or for those using rainwater for non-potable applications, we recommend installing our filter housings with our Refillable 10" Cartridge and this Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Media. Activated Carbon is used to reduce taste and odor coming from rainwater, and is highly recommended for creating a fresh drinking water system. If you are looking to install to drinking water standards, see our drinking water filtration guide for complete list of recommended components. Filter would be installed after the pump and after the pressure tank but before point-of-use. Use 3/4" MPT connections when installing filter housing. Filter change is recommended every 3-4 months, or when there's a noticeable drop in water pressure.
Activated carbon is positively charged and therefore able to remove negative ions from the water such as ozone, chlorine, fluorides and dissolved organic solutes by absorption onto the activated carbon. The coconut shell carbon must be replaced periodically as it may become saturated and unable to absorb.
