Wisy Vortex Filter for Pre-Filtering Your Rainwater Cistern System

FEATURES

This is one of our favorite pre-filters, used to filter the water immediately after it comes off the roof but before it enters the cistern. This filter is best used in ALL climates, is winter-proof, and is ideal for applications where more than 4 downspouts are being collected, on a roof under 2200 square feet. With the vortex dynamic, the Wisy filter automatically diverts the first flush of water away from the cistern and then routes the remaining water into the tank through a vertically-mounted, stainless steel, cleanable filter screen. Furthermore, the filter screen actually aerates the water as it passes through.

This filter can be installed in both above-ground and below-ground applications. For above-ground installations, a mounting bracket will be needed, which can either be made from treated lumber, or you can purchase one of the fancy shmancy stainless steel mounting brackets, found here.

When installing underground, make sure to seal all joints (including the swivel joint) with the included sealant tape.

EASE OF INSTALLATION: 8 on a scale of 1-10 when installing underground, and 5 on a scale of 1-10 when installing above-ground. The varying pipe elevations and potential for settling/shifting after installation make this a product best left to the pros to install. We recommend have some experience with running drainage piping.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?: If you have more than four downspouts that you're collecting from, and if your property has some slope to it (doesn't work on flat properties unless you're using it above-ground), then this filter is a great choice! Note, though, that the filter is not 100% efficient at routing rainwater into the cistern. You can expect 70% to enter cistern, and 30% to carry dirt and debris out through the bottom "trash" outlet. If these don't apply to you, consider our Monjolin filter !

FREQUENCY OF MAINTENANCE: Somewhat often. The maintenance is not difficult -- you just have to pull the filter out and stick it in the dishwasher. Occasionally you'll want to scrub the filter down with some dishwashing detergent and a soft-bristle brush. But you'll want to clean the screen once per month to start, and then gauge frequency of cleaning after first year of use. Places with lots of trees and high pollen counts will need to clean the filter more, while places with few trees will find that once per 6 months may be all that is required.

WHAT ELSE WILL I NEED?: If installing inground, consider adding the 20" riser. We recommend keeping 4-6" of riser above grade to prevent groundwater from entering the filter. Seal riser with silicone caulking or the included seal tape. Also, you'll need a short (24" or so) piece of 4" SDR-35 (recommended) or 4" thinwall PVC pipe to go into the Vortex Filter inlet bell and gasket. For the middle and bottom fitting, we recommend adding our 4" no hub couplings to your order to adapt to either 4" Schedule 40 PVC or 4" SDR-35.

TOOLS FOR INSTALLATION: A level, a shovel, silicone caulking, dish soap (to lubricate the pipe before inserting into the bell and gasket inlet) and something to compact the ground underneath the Wisy. Oh, and some good ol' fashioned hard work and determination doesn't hurt either.

*For potable systems, additional filtration is required. This filter alone will not make rainwater potable.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The WISY WFF 100 Vortex Filter separates debris larger than 280 microns from collected rainwater and directs filtered water to the storage tank during an entire rain even eliminating the need for any additional first flush type devices. The filter is designed to provide highly oxygenated water to the storage tank because of its diamond cut vertical design. The WISY WFF 100 Vortex Filter is the first step in a healthy rainwater harvesting system.

The WISY WFF 100 Vortex Filter is the only commercial vertical filter made in the world and provides the highest quality of rainwater. Because of the vertical design, the filter has a self-cleaning effect. Debris is discharged from the filter along with “first flush” and excess water necessary to carry debris to storm or grade. There is no basket to clean or additional sprayers necessary to “rinse” the filter. The filter works on capillary action to provide the highest quality of stored rainwater with minimal maintenance.
